10 Most Expensive Man Utd Transfer Flops In History

7. Danny Wallace (£1,200,000)

In 1989, Danny Wallace joined Manchester United at a time when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in pursuit of his first trophy at the club. A £1 million purchase from Southampton, it was hoped Wallace would solve Ferguson's left-wing issues following the departure of Jesper Olsen. Wallace looked capable of doing just that, with his 64 goals in 253 total appearances for the Saints making the winger/striker hot property at the time, explaining why Ferguson shelled out what amounts to almost £17 million in today's currency. However, Wallace proved to be an expensive bench warmer rather than wing wizard, with Lee Sharpe's breakthrough into the first team picture limiting his appearances before the emergence of Ryan Giggs sounded the death knell, with the Englishman failing to make a single appearance in the league all season in 1991-92. Wallace, though sold to Birmingham City after a stint farmed out on loan at Millwall, did at least briefly live up to his enormous price tag, by scoring one goal and setting up two more in United's 6€“2 thrashing of Arsenal in the fourth round of the League Cup in 1990. Sadly, stomping performances such as these were few and far between.
