10 Most Expensive Transfer Flops In Liverpool History
6. Djibril Cisse
When Michael Owen departed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2004, it was vital that new boss Benitez replaced the Englishman with a similarly top class striker. Djibril Cisse had a huge reputation, having scored 75 goals in the previous three seasons for Auxerre, and when he joined Liverpool for £14.5m there was great excitement at the club. The Frenchman scored on his Premier League debut away to Tottenham, but managed only two in his next 14 matches. On 30th October 2004, Cisse suffered a broken leg at Blackburn Rovers, and didn't return until the following April. He managed to be a part of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League glory, scoring a penalty in the shootout in the final, but it had still been a season to forget. From that point on, he just never managed to settle at Liverpool. Just nine goals in 33 league appearances was a fairly meagre return in 2005/06, and in July 2006 he moved to Marseille on loan despite breaking leg his leg again while on international duty with France. A year later he made the move to Marseille permanent, bringing an end to an incredibly forgettable spell on Merseyside. Despite this, he remains something of a cult hero to this day.
