10 Most Expensive Transfer Flops In Premier League History
3. Juan Sebastian Veron
When Manchester United acquired the signature of Veron in the summer of 2001, for £28.1m, he was arguably seen as the finest central midfield player on the planet. Sir Alex Ferguson seemingly had an absolute gem on his hands, but the Argentinian star simply never sparked into life at Old Trafford. The pace and power of the Premier League immediately seemed problematic for the former Argentina international, and the time and space he was allowed with Lazio in Serie A was suddenly gone. He scored five times in 40 games in his first season, and although his second campaign showed signs of promise, he remained way short of the level he had reached in Italy. He wasn't awful during his time in Manchester by any means, but he was hugely disappointing. Veron joined Chelsea for £15m in 2003, following Roman Abramovich's takeover at Stamford Bridge, but he failed to impress there too, during his one solitary season in west London. He was a world-class player for a time, but in England he flattered to deceive greatly.
