10 Famous Sporting Protests

8. Pakistan Forfeit Oval Test

Although the series was settled at 2-0 to England, Pakistan were in a commanding position to win the final Test of their 2006 tour at The Oval before a ball tampering controversy.

During the afternoon session on day four in London, umpire Darrell Hair, in agreement with his colleague Billy Doctrove, adjudged that the Pakistani team had been guilty of ball tampering (doctoring the ball illegally to improve its condition for the bowling team).

England were awarded five penalty runs and offered a replacement ball, but it was not to be in use for long because Pakistan refused to take to the field after the tea break in protest of the decision. The umpires gave them two more opportunities to resume play, but captain Inzamam-ul-Haq kept his team in their changing room in spite of their likely victory.

After 20 minutes of waiting, the umpires removed the bails and declared England the winners via forfeit, the first cricket Test to end in such a fashion in over 1,000 matches.

At an International Cricket Council hearing, Inzamam was cleared of all charges related to ball tampering. Umpire Hair was dropped from the elite panel before a brief return in 2008.
