10 Football Teammates Who Absolutely Hated Each Other
3. Rio Ferdinand & John Terry
John Terry and Rio Ferdinand once formed one of the strongest central defensive partnerships the English national team has ever seen. They were both terrific players, and their strengths perfectly complimented each other. Terry was all blood and thunder, while Rio was a more composed, refined player who excelled with the ball at his feet. Both benefited from playing together.
Their professional relationship fell apart in 2011, when Terry was investigated for alleged racial abuse towards Rio's brother, Anton. The Chelsea man denied the charges, and was eventually acquitted by the Metropolitan Police, but the FA found him guilty in September 2012. He was served a four-game ban and fined £220,000. Yet it was Ferdinand's international career which was effectively ended by the incident.
Rio was omitted from Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad for fear of a potential conflict with Terry, who was stripped of international captaincy, but remained in the side. Ferdinand was even passed over in favour of the inexperienced Martin Kelly when Gary Cahill pulled out through injury, prompting his agent to accuse Hodgson of "a lack of respect." Terry retired from international football that September, and while the duo have now seemingly made peace, it's hard to imagine the resentment has completely subsided.
