10 Football Teams That Over-Performed In 2019/20

2. Hellas Verona

Having become something of a yo-yo club between Serie A and Serie B in the last decade, Hellas Verona looked set for another hard season following their playoff promotion from the Italian second division in 18/19.

That proved not to be the case. 9th placed represented their joint-highest league finish since the 1999/00 season, the 20 years since having seen the Italian club fall as low as 17th in Serie C.

Hellas Verona's good fortunes in the league are in large parts thanks to the difficulty teams had in breaking them down. New signing Amir Rrahmani, academy prospect Marash Kumbulla and loanee Koray Gunter formed a formidable partnership at the back as the club kept 10 clean sheets in the league.

Unfortunately, this defence has already been torn apart at the time of writing.

Rrahmani was snapped up by Napoli for £12,000,000 back in January and was temporarily loaned back to club, and Koray Gunter has returned to his parent club, Genoa.

The Gialloblu have already made steps to resolve this issue with the loan acquisition of Mert Cetin, and provided they maintain the bulk of their squad, they are on the right path to becoming top-flight regulars.
