10 Footballers Who Claimed It Definitely Wasn't All About The Money

2. Rio Ferdinand

Despite claims he might retire, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has joined the man who gave him his chance, Harry Redknapp, at Queens Park Rangers following a fantastic 12 years in a Manchester United shirt where he won almost every possible accolade there is to win. Rio clearly hopes to see out his playing career in the Premier League, but is the nostalgia of playing under Redknapp again in the top division really his only motive in signing for the club? Now, Rio has denied that it is "not about the money" following calls from several people that it most definitely is, and that he should probably have just retired gracefully rather than follow the Sol Campbell model for career over-extension. He claimed that he could have earned a lot more money elsewhere had he not chosen QPR, but that almost hard to believe from a 35-year-old defender who is past his prime. The one-year deal is thought to be around £70,000-a-week, and frankly it would be difficult to find any club who would have been willing to pay Rio that much money at his current standard. The defender seems to be looking to play out one final year of his career whilst earning as much money as he possibly can from a club with good financial abilities.
