10 Footballers You Totally Forgot Played For England

4. Jon Flanagan

There was a time when Jon Flanagan was one of the hottest young prospects in the Liverpool youth academy. The youngster took advantage of injuries to first and second choice right backs Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly, quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite with his no nonsense approach to the game.

After earning the nickname the Red Cafu from the Anfield faithful, Flanagan had his biggest run in the Liverpool team in the 2013-14 season under Brendan Rodgers, catching the eye of England and former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson.

Flanagan came on as a substitute for future Red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in a friendly against Ecuador in 2014, and although he was chosen by Hodgson as a reserve for the 2014 World Cup squad, he has still never made a competitive appearance for his country.

Because of this, and his heritage through his grandparents, Flanagan is technically still eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland if he so chooses. With Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Nathaniel Clyne, and Joe Gomez all potential right backs for Southgate, maybe this would be the youngster's best chance to play international football again.
