10 Footballers You Totally Forgot Played For England

2. Jay Bothroyd

2010 was not a fun time to be an England fan. After not even qualifying for the 2008 European Championships, the team under Fabio Capello put in four dreadful performances in the 2010 World Cup, winning just one game and exiting in the Round of 16 against Germany.

After the World Cup failure, the manager kept with his style of favouring a big target man up front, and brought in Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd for a friendly against France. This surprised many, as not only did Bothroyd become Cardiff's first England player in their history, his was a rare call up in that he played his football in the Championship.

Bothroyd is the definition of a journeyman. Since his league debut with Coventry City in 2000, the striker has played for 12 different clubs including Perugia in Italy, Muangthong United in Thailand, and Jubilo Iwata and Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo in Japan.

His most successful spell came in Cardiff, spending a career high three seasons with the team and scoring 45 goals. The striker's spike in form was rewarded with a cameo second half appearance for England in a game that also saw the debuts of Andy Carroll and future captain Jordan Henderson.
