Italian football has never been far from the headlines when it comes to controversies.

Dodgy owners, match-fixing probes, 'ultras' taking control of boardrooms: the list goes on to the extent you could arguably make an article in itself of ten biggest Italian football controversies.

This was the biggest of all, however, which saw Juventus not only stripped of multiple league titles but relegated down to Serie B.

Investigated by the police after telephone recordings picked up some interesting conversations between club general managers and Italian football officials, a number of clubs were found guilty of influencing match official appointments to favour their clubs.

AC Milan, Lazio, Fiorentina, and Reggina were all given punishments as a result of the investigation, but it was Juventus who suffered the most at the time.

Stripped of titles from both the 2005 and 2006 season, the Turin giants were also demoted and forced to start the following campaign with a hefty points deduction.

While Juventus eventually bounced back and now dominate the domestic game again, at the time their squad was decimated thanks to the punishment handed down.

Club legends like Gigi Buffon, Alessandro Del Piero, and Pavel Nedved did stay put, but big players like Fabio Cannavaro and Zlatan Ibrahimovic left the club, while a plethora of players across the league also made their way to new clubs following the scandal.
