10 Footballing Scandals That Shocked The World

The English football sexual abuse scandal which rocked the game in 2016 remains firmly in the thoughts of football fans.

Headlined in the main by former Crewe Alexandra coach, Barry Bennell, the sheer nature of the scandal began to come to light when former player Andy Woodward suggested in an interview he had been subject to sexual abuse as a young player.

Woodward's comments seemingly opened the floodgates for a plethora of other complaints from former players, as Bennell, along with other coaches, were caught out and subsequently arrested.

The impact of the case was huge, as Bennell was handed a lengthy prison sentence, while others in the case were also given custodial sentences for their actions.

Such was the severity of the issues at hand, the UK government passed new legislation to further protect young people involved in football.

While this case and those implicated are nothing for the footballing world to be proud of, it did at least bring attention to an issue which goes wider than just football and sport.

Hopefully, we never see anything like this again and the powers that be move to protect younger players going forward.
