10 Former Aston Villa Players They Could Do With Now

4. Ryan Bertrand

Along with Chelsea€™s Cesar Azpilicueta, Ryan Bertrand is quite probably the most in-form left-back in the English top-flight. One perhaps shouldn€™t be too surprised by his stunning performances for Southampton so far this season - after all, this is a man who started in a victorious Champions League final at the age of 22. It€™s only now that he is finally receiving the recognition that he truly deserves, however, with many having deemed him not to be of the required standard for Chelsea. He is currently flourishing for the Saints, and finally proving his worth. Villa supporters will wave their hands in the air and claim that it was they who allowed Bertrand a platform to showcase his talents and place himself in the shop window, having appeared 14 times on loan for the club last season. While he performed admirably, his contributions certainly weren€™t as ground-breaking as they have been at St. Mary€™s thus far this campaign, as he has formed part of a rock-solid defence that has conceded just six goals to leave Southampton sitting pretty in second position. While Aly Cissokho is doing just fine at left-back for Villa this season - expectations could not have been lower after his howler of a campaign for Liverpool last season - he is simply not a patch on the former Champions League winner.
