10 Glorious Scotland International Football Failures

1. Scotland 2-2 England (10 June 2017)

The Scotlandiest Scotlanding in the history of Scotland. On paper, this really isn't a bad point, but it leaves Scotland with it all to do in trying to reach the World Cup for the first time in 20 years. That it happened against the Auld Enemy makes it all the more heartbreaking.

For 85 minutes this game was absolutely dreadful. Despite it being football's oldest rivalry, it like it was being played at a testimonial pace in the first half. Harry Kane had a sight of goal, but blazed over. A forgettable first half.

The second half was barely better, but the warning signs were there. A deflected shot by Jake Livermore came back off the post. A warning sign. Craig Gordon then missed his touch after a back pass, and put it out for a throw. Calamity averted. For 30 seconds at least. From the resulting throw, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's deflected effort was straight at Gordon, but he somehow palmed the ball into the net. 20 minutes left, and the game looked to be petering out.

Then the madness began. Ryan Fraser was fouled 30 yards out with three minutes remaining, and Leigh Griffith's stunning free kick looked to have rescued a point. Chris Martin then fell over and somehow won another free kick. With the clock approaching 90, Griffiths did it again. Joe Hart set up on the other side, so Griffiths put it in the other corner. Hampden erupts. Scotland had finally defeated England for the first time in 18 years and the first time at home since 1985.

Nope. An England free kick is pushed away by Gordon, and just as Scotland fans begin to breathe easy, Stuart Armstrong gives the ball away needlessly and a floated cross, which Gordon should come for, is poked home by Harry Kane, and no-one really knows how to feel.

Mark Renton was right.
