10 Great Players Liverpool Missed Out On Signing

5. Mario Gotze

In 2011, Dalglish was looking to bolster his squad. It would turn out to be one of the worst summers of transfer activity in Liverpool's history though, considering the money they spent. Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Jose Enrique and Jordan Henderson were all signed for large amounts of the money- Henderson, in fairness, is now fully justifying his price-tag- but the majority failed spectacularly at Anfield. During that same summer, Dalglish kept a close eye on a highly-rated 19-year-old by the name of Mario Gotze, who was impressing hugely at Borussia Dortmund. It has been reported that the club had to choose between Henderson and the German, and Dalglish and director of football strategy Damien Comolli both opted for the Englishman. Although Henderson has become one of the first names on Brendan Rodgers' team-sheet these days, and a future captain, there can be no doubting who the player with the more potential is. Gotze has established himself as one of the greatest young players in the world, moving to Bayern Munich in 2013 and scoring the winning goal in this summer's World Cup final against Argentina. He is a hugely gifted player with a wonderful future; he would have been a superstar at Liverpool.
