10 Great Players Who Were Ruined By Chelsea

5. Daniel Sturridge

The second of several strikers, Daniel Sturridge may be a surprise inclusion. Currently, the forward is on fire for both club and country as the main man up top. Rewind a couple years ago and his tory was on a very different path. In 2009, Chelsea signed Sturridge for a fee of £3.5M from Manchester City in what looked like another very good deal for a young, English footballer with bags of potential. After a few years floating around the first team and a short loan spell at Bolton, Sturridge was given a chance by new manager Andre Villas-Boas and grasped it with both hands. Initially he made a positive impact, scoring and assisting on a regular basis from the wing. It was his position on the wing however that would be the cause of his dis-pleasure at Chelsea and the reason for his departure to Liverpool in 2013. Like Wright-Phillps and Parker before him, Sturridge would play second fiddle to established players Dider Drogba and Nicholas Anelka. The former Aston Villa academy player was never given the opportunity to play in his preferred striker role while at Chelsea and as a result could never show what he was truly capable of. At Liverpool, Sturridge has become a crucial part of Brendan Rodgers side, forming a prolific partnership with Luis Suarez last season that saw the club considered title contenders for the first time in many years.
