10 Greatest Bargains In Premier League History

1. Peter Schmeichle

Goalkeepers don't often get as much praise as outfield players, and although someone like Cantona, Vieira or Ronaldo could easily have topped this list, the influence Peter Schmeichel had on United, considering he cost just £505,000 from Brondby in 1991, was unbelievable. Nine years later, Ferguson described it as the "bargain of the century." As soon as the Dane came into the side he had an aura about him. He made his defence feel totally at ease, and some of the saves he pulled off were stunning. He was the best 'keeper on the planet for a number of years, as United won the Premier League in 1992/93 and 1993/94. In the former, he kept 22 clean sheets, as his side won the title for the first time in 26 years. Schmeichel's magnificent United career climaxed in the best possible way. The then 35-year-old's final game for the club was the 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League Final, and his acrobatic celebration when Solskjaer scored the winner was memorable. He also won the Premier League and FA Cup in 1998/99, meaning Ferguson's men had completed an unprecedented treble. Schmeichel was an enormous loss when he left, and the defence suddenly had a susceptible feel about it. They spent many years unsuccessfully trying to replace him. He is the best goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League, and the greatest bargain in its rich history. We'd love to know your 10 Greatest Bargains In Premier League History.
