10 Greatest British Performances In Champions League History

9. Manchester City 2-0 Bayern Munich: 2011/12 Group Stage

When we come to look back on Manchester City's first two Champions League seasons, we may well get different impressions of how equipped they are for European football. The second one, as Champions, they didn't look threatening at all and granted they were given a hellish group by their status as third seeds, they were thoroughly out-thought and outplayed over the course of the 6 games and often relying on Joe Hart to prevent some, potentially, bad defeats. But for the sake of City's best performance, this entry will take you back a season from that. This is where City look threatening and imposing and produced some of their best stuff. It could be argued that the 3-0 away win in Villareal on Matchday 4 should've taken the place of this, but Vilarreal were a shade of the team who had previously reached the semi finals in 2005-06, and eventually exited pointless with only 2 goals to their name. On the same token, Bayern Munich rested several regulars for the game at the Etihad, but it still required all the attributes- power, class, resillience- to topple the previously unbeaten Bavarians. Knowing that a 2-1 defeat in Naples the previous matchday had handed over control of 2nd place to the Italians, Mancini's men knew nothing except a win will appease the fans- even it that meant a drop into the Europa League. So, that is what they preceded to do. City won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from David Silva and Yaya Toure (making him City's top marksmen that season in Europe with the three goals) either side of half time. It however wasn't enough to save City as Napoli managed to scrounge second place thanks to a 2-0 win in Villareal, relegating City to the Europa League.
