10 Greatest British Performances In Champions League History

8. Rangers 4-1 PSV 1999/2000 First Group Stage

Drawn in a group with Bayern Munich, Valencia and PSV, the Glaswegians were not expected to progress but were expected as Scottish representatives to make a good fist of these games, aiming to perform well in home games, while giving fans optimism by away performances. A triumph against UEFA Cup winners Parma 2-1 on aggregate in the thurd qualifying round, gave Rangers the confidence that they could make waves in the competition, where they'd made such an impact 7 season previously. Only a last minute goal from Michael Tarnat prevented a famous Ibrox scalp of the Germans and that momentum helped them secure 3 points at the expense of PSV in Amsterdam. Central to both these results were the goals of German Jorg Albertz, but it would turn out to be another foreigner that would orchestrate the destruction of the Dutch champions in Glasgow. Michael Mols, who was signed by his compatriot Dick Advocaat in the summer of 1999 and was later to suffer an injury in the last fixture against Bayern that dramatically altered his career with the Gers, went on to double Rangers lead after captain Lorenzo Amoruso headed in the opener in the 19th minute. Profilic PSV frontman Ruud Van Nistelrooy converted from the spot to half the deficit as the game reached half time, but on the resumption of play Neil McCann and then Mols struck past keeper Ivica Kralj to complete the job and secure this night as one of the best in their chequered history. Despite the positivity created out of the double over PSV and the point against Munich, the Gers lost narrowly against Valencia and Bayern to finish just two points behind the Spaniards to take the UEFA Cup spot ahead of PSV.
