10 Greatest Foreign Premier League Players Of All Time
2. Dennis Bergkamp
There has not been a more aesthetically-pleasing player to watch in the Premier League era than Dennis Bergkamp. He may have lacked the pace of Ronaldo, the leadership of Keane and the goals of Henry, but he was a footballing genius. Bruce Rioch took him to Arsenal from Inter Milan in 1995, and he had been a wonderful player prior to moving to the Premier League. He was the Gunners' most expensive ever signing at the time. He didn't start well, however, and it wasn't long before the British press were deeming the Dutchman a waste of money. He finished the season with 11 goals in 33 appearances, and it's fair to say he hadn't set the world alight. When Wenger replaced Rioch as manager, Bergkamp looked a completely different player though. He scored a last-minute winner against Tottenham in the north London derby in 1996/97, endearing himself to the Arsenal fans greatly in the process. His form was influential, and he was just getting started. Bergkamp was one of the most important players during the double-winning season of 1997/98, and scored one of the greatest hat-tricks you are ever likely to see against Leicester City in August 1997. He was named the PFA Player of the Year. Bergkamp remained superb for many years after that, and his eye for a pass, good goal tally and moments of individual brilliance were an absolute joy to watch. He won the Premier League in 2001/02, and was a key member of Wenger's wonderful 'Invincibles' team two years later. He eventually left the club in 2006 at the age of 37, having scored 120 goals in 423 appearances. He is one of the most gifted players of the last 20 years.
