The USA's most successful men's tennis player of the open era, Pete Sampras won a total of seven Wimbledon men's singles titles, a record he currently shares with Roger Federer. Famous for his powerful serves and dominating style of play, the American is a loveable player who was generally popular with all tennis fans. He won 14 Grand Slam singles titles, another record he held for a number of years. It has since been matched by Rafael Nadal and surpassed by Roger Federer but being the first to achieve such a feat, Sampras' prowess cannot be ignored. He was also world number one for six consecutive seasons from 1993 until 1998 during which he won countless matches on all surfaces. His greatest achievements were at Wimbledon which is why he climbs to near the top of this list. As mentioned he won seven singles titles at SW19, all between 1993 and 2000. The only match he lost at Wimbledon during this period was at the quarter finals in 1996 where he lost to the eventual winner Richard Krajicek. His Wimbledon record is phenomenal and for that reason, coupled with his overall Grand Slam performance he comes a close second in the list of the all-time greatest Wimbledon men's champions.
