Midfield powerhouse Thomas Gravesen was dubbed The Great Dane by some Evertonians, and he was more fearsome than a rabid one at that. Joining the Blues from German outfit Hamburg in 2000, the Scandinavian hardman quickly set about destroying all who stood before him in the middle of the park and became an instant favourite among Toffees supporters, lauded as much for his abrasive challenges as his blistering free kicks and penalties. Gravesen played a pivotal role in Evertons journey from relegation battlers to European challengers between 2000 and 2005. His performances were so impressive for Everton he would eventually make the switch to Real Madrid, only to rejoin the club on loan from Celtic three years later.
