This was Spurs' first home match in the newly formed Premier League - and it would be their first defeat. It was supposed to be a new era of excellence and Spurs were certainly more fancied than the visiting side. Having drawn 0-0 away at Southampton in their first ever Premier League match four days earlier, this was an extremely disappointing result. The dawn of a new era at White Hart was met with two goals from speedy striker John Williams without reply.
