10 Important Last Minute Goals That Should Never Have Happened

9. Jamie Hewitt - Chesterfield 3-3 Middlesbrough (13 April 1997)

No third-tier side has ever made it to the FA Cup Final, and if not for a couple of poor refereeing calls, Chesterfield could have made history. Middlesbrough were the better side in the first half, but they had Vladimir Kinder sent off for two bookings and things began to look rocky.

The Spireites took the lead on 54 minutes when Andy Morris rolled home on the rebound, and they doubled their advantage six minutes later after keeper Ben Morris fouled Roberts. Sean Dyche blasted the penalty down the middle to make it 2-0. A quick Fabrizio Ravanelli reply was then followed by two controversial moments that would change this game.

Jon Howard found himself with just the keeper to beat, and his close range shot hit the bar, crossed the line, and bounced back out. The goal was not given and Chesterfield couldn't believe they weren't 3-1 up. A minute later, David Elleray pointed to the spot after Sean Dyche clumsily fouled Juninho. Sure, it was a definite foul, but it took place a yard outside the box. Craig Hignett scored to send the tie to extra-time.

Gianluca Festa's goal gave Boro a 3-2 lead in extra-time, but a home town boy secured a replay for Chesterfield. The Middlesbrough defence allowed a deep cross to bounce in the box, and Jamie Hewitt's 120th minute header ended a dramatic FA Cup tie that Chesterfield should have won in 90 minutes.

Sadly for Chesterfield, Boro won the replay 3-0, but in their first ever FA Cup Final they lost 2-0 to Ruud Gullit's Chelsea.
