10 Important Last Minute Goals That Should Never Have Happened

3. Michael Owen - Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City (20 September 2009)

Michael Owen's goal-scoring record at Manchester United really wasn't as bad as people remember. He scored 17 goals in 52 appearances over three years, but was almost exclusively a substitute, with only 18 starts made. But it was a largely forgettable time at Old Trafford, save for one late, late goal in a classic Manchester derby.

City equalised three times with a Gareth Barry goal and a Craig Bellamy double cancelling out Wayne Rooney's early goal and a pair of Darren Fletcher headers. Craig Bellamy's 90th minute strike after Rio Ferdinand gave away possession cheaply looked to have rescued a point for City in a pulsating derby.

Owen had came on late for Dimitar Berbatov, and deep into stoppage time, he latched onto Ryan Giggs' pinpoint pass to stroke past Shay Given in the 96th minute to ensure all three points would remain at Old Trafford. The trouble here was that the fourth official's board went up signalling four minutes of additional time.

Bellamy had been celebrating his leveller as the clock ticked to 90 minutes, and United did make a substitution, bringing on Michael Carrick, but the extra time seemed a little excessive. A controversial finish to a fantastic game.
