10 Important Last Minute Goals That Should Never Have Happened
2. Ben Watson - Manchester City 0-1 Wigan Athletic (11 May 2013)
In late January 2009, Ben Watson was in Middlesbrough undergoing his medical to seal his move to the Riverside Stadium from Crystal Palace to Teesside. Then at the last minute, an offer came in from Wigan Athletic that matched Boro's offer and Watson opted to sign for the Latics instead. His decision would be vindicated when Wigan finished comfortably mid-table that season, while Middlesbrough were relegated to the Championship.
A few years later, in November 2012, Watson broke his leg in a challenge with Raheem Sterling as Liverpool beat Wigan 3-0. It didn't look likely he'd play any further part in the season. While in a relegation dogfight, they surprisingly reached the FA Cup Final. Watson desperately tried to get back to full fitness, making it back the week before the final, playing in a 3-2 win away to West Brom.
Wigan performed well in the FA Cup final against their much more illustrious opponents, forcing Manchester City to put in a very flat performance. Wigan only made one substitution in the game, with Watson, who spent the first 81 minutes of the final on the bench, coming on for Jordi Gomez. Just as the board went up to signal three minutes of injury time, Shaun Maloney's corner was headed home at by Watson, to cap a remarkable upset.
Wigan were relegated just three days later after a 4-1 loss to Arsenal, but Watson's goal sealed their first ever major trophy.
