Back in 2006, Southampton left back Gareth Bale was starting to turn heads for his abilities at set pieces and the raw pace he has become so well known for - Tottenham Hotspur beat off their rivals to secure his services for a paltry fee but he had to wait for his chance at stardom.

Injuries and inconsistent form saw motormouth Benoit Assou-Ekoto preferred to Bale at left back and it wasn't until the South African suffered his own injuries woes that Harry Redknapp felt he could take a chance on the Welshman - fast forward to 2020 and Bale is a Galactico at Real Madrid... sort of.

However, in 2013, Real Madrid weren't the only party interested in signing Gareth Bale as the two Manchester clubs loomed over the transfer negotiations. In truth, Bale was closer to United than City but the financial firepower the Etihad side have at their disposal could have persuaded Bale to reject Madrid.

Had he opted to join City, he would have been the ultimate final piece in the City squad and the club's dominance of the Premier League and domestic cups would have been long lasting indeed. European glory is questionable but Bale's electric pace and inevitable cut backs to Sergio Aguero would have seen the pair leading City as talismans - Bale would no doubt have challenged Messi & Ronaldo for the Balon d'Or from the very beginning too.

We still might see Bale at City but his massive wages and his knackered ligaments mean we'll never see the best he could have offered.
