10 Incredible Stories From The Summer Olympics
7. Shun Fujimoto (1976)
Most people find broken bones painful. But not Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto, who went to the 1976 Olympic Games in Montréal just to prove that he was rock-f***ing-solid. During his floor routine, Fujimoto fell awkwardly and broke his kneecap.
As he walked off the mat, Fujimoto didn't tell any of his teammate, or even let anybody see that he was in agonising pain, thinking it would damage his team's confidence. As if competing in Olympic-level gymnastics isn't hard enough, try doing it with a broken knee without letting anybody else know about it.
While most normal people probably would have called it quits there, Shun Fujimoto isn't a normal man. In fact, he's part Terminator. On the pommel horse, Fujimoto scored a 9.5/10, but it was his performance on the rings that caught people's attention.
The routine finished with Fujimoto performing a twisting double somersault and dropping from eight feet above the ground to land on a broken knee. There is something seriously wrong with a man that decided he had to do that.
Fujimoto finally realised he was actually a human person that felt pain, and withdrew from the rest of the competition. His performance, along with that of the Japanese team, earned them the gold medal by four tenths of a point. Fujimoto, at this point barely capable of standing, was helped to the platform by his teammates.
