Man United boss Louis Van Gaal, blunt as ever, stated exactly what many had been worrying about their former youth player when he sold him to Arsenal during the summer, lamenting his inferior goalscoring record when in comparison to his more clinical colleagues. There were no questions regarding Welbecks ability to finish when the gangly 17 year old promptly curled a sumptuous 30 yard shot into the top corner of the net just minutes after coming on to make his Premier League debut. It was November 2008, and the opponents were newly-promoted Stoke City who were trailing the Champions League winners by three goals when the confident teenager blasted home his long-range effort. The goal was struck with such a ferocity, yet poise and accuracy, that it had the crowd on its feet to applaud the latest prodigy to emerge from a productive club youth academy. The game finished 5-0, and Welbeck went on to play 91 more Premier League games for the Red Devils yet will be disappointed that he only bagged 19 more goals over the next six years.
