The League Cup fixture was the ginger midfielder€™s first-team debut for the Red Devils, and he seized his opportunity with aplomb. By scoring both goals, he began his Manchester United career as he meant to carry on. With Port Vale having taken the lead in the first half, the youngster levelled matters after 37 minutes by clipping home a superb equaliser after capitalising on a woeful defensive mix-up. The 5ft 6in midfielder found the match-winner in the second home when he headed home an inch-perfect cross to send the Red Devils into the next round.
€œI still find it difficult to convey just what that meant to me then, aged 19, playing for the club I supported. It was a thrill I€™ll never forget. Our manager was the first to rest his senior players in the League Cup to give youngsters like me a chance. Physically, it was always a struggle for me in those early days. I wasn€™t big, I wasn€™t quick and I wasn€™t strong. I don€™t know who the hell I ever made it!€ - Paul Scholes, September 2014.
A league debut was the reward for his efforts three days later at Portman Road, and he found the back of the net once again, although it proved to be just a consolation this time as Ipswich Town ran out 3-2 winners.
