10 Man Utd Players Who Nearly Signed For Liverpool
7. Teddy Sheringham
Arms outstretched, with an incredulous grin stretching from ear to ear, as Bayern Munich defenders slumped to the turf in desolation - the defining image of Teddy Sherigham's career. Despite signing for the club at 31 years of age, Sheringham has written himself into Old Trafford folklore with that equalising strike at the Nou Camp in the 1999 Champions League final. Forever renowned as a hero around the red half of Manchester for that strike, and indeed his other contributions during a fruitful four year spell with the Red Devils, there is one titbit of information that he doesn't like to share with his legions of supporters too often - that he was nearly donning the slighter darker shade of red. Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans has since mischievously let the cat out of the bag, by letting it be known how enthused the former Spurs striker had been about penning a contract at Anfield prior to his move to Old Trafford.
''You're always looking to enhance your squad. Maybe it would have done, maybe it wouldn't. We also went in for the likes of Teddy Sheringham at that time. Teddy was very interested in coming, he was 29 or 30 at the time. But the club had a policy of not buying older players. As it happened, he went to Manchester United and played for six or seven years there with great success.'' - Roy Evans, September 2013.
Perhaps it would have been worth it for the Reds even just to distinguish Sheringham's act of divine intervention on that fateful night of glory in Barcelona 15 years ago.
