10 Most Awkward Football Reunions Ever

3. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Jose Mourinho

For a manager who loves to work with so many top-class footballers, he should really have a bit more foresight when it comes to who he irks. It€™s no surprise that he fell out with half of the Real Madrid squad during his time at the Bernabeu - one his only blotches in football management - with his soured relationship with the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo becoming a sub-plot of its€™ own. The Ronaldo chapter didn€™t start in Spain, however. Indeed, it has pages beginning during their time in England, when Mourinho was a cocky, young thing at Chelsea and Ronaldo was - well, the same, only picking up a pay-cheque from Manchester United instead. With Mourinho having made no desire of his wish to manage his home country one day, maybe he shouldn€™t have sneered at Portugal€™s best player in April 2007, insulting his family and standard of education. With the Chelsea boss having intimated the Man United were winning a number of questionable penalties, Ronaldo retorted that his compatriot €˜does not know how to admit his own failures€™.
''A player that wants to be the best in the world needs to behave well, to keep quiet and to have sufficient honesty and maturity to verify that, against the facts that I have shown, there is no argument on his part. If he says it is false that Manchester United have conceded penalties that were not given, it۪s lies. And if he is a liar, he will never reach the highest level that he desires in football. It۪s a game where a kid had some statements not showing maturity and respect, maybe difficult childhood, no education, maybe the consequence of that.۪۪ - Jose Mourinho, April 2007.
Three years later, the Portuguese boss assumed the reins of control at the Santiago Bernabeu, but despite achieving some success together, the pair never did patch up their differences, with Ronaldo lamenting a 'bad atmosphere' at the club.
