10 Most Controversial Premier League Moments
6. Kevin Keegan Would Love It, He Really Would
Probably the most memorable post-match interview in Premier League history occurred when Kevin Keegan lost his rag on live television, as the 1995-96 title race between his beloved Newcastle United and perennial challengers Manchester United came to a head.
The Magpies swept all before them throughout the opening half of the campaign to cement a 12-point lead at the top of the league by January. However, the wheels began to come off afterwards and that seemingly unassailable lead was eroded.
Red Devils supremo Alex Ferguson then suggested that teams tried harder to beat his United side than they did against ‘The Entertainers’ of Newcastle, which lit the touch-paper for one of the greatest outbursts ever to hit our screens.
“I've kept really quiet but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimations when he said that,” bellowed Keegan following a narrow 1-0 win at Leeds with two games still to play.
“We’ve not resorted to that. You can tell him now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something. And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them, love it.”
Despite his passionate show of emotion, Keegan’s north-eastern upstarts drew the final two fixtures and their illustrious rivals won both of theirs, thus claiming the trophy by a four-point margin.
