This is another one than could be considered somewhat harsh, but James McCarthy's time at Everton doesn't hold up well under close scrutiny.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder followed Roberto Martinez to Goodison Park from Wigan Athletic in 2013 and, although he initially made a positive impact at the club, his influence has gradually waned since then.

During his early days in a blue shirt, McCarthy worked like a Trojan, covering every inch of the pitch during matches, and he became known for his reading of the game and as a calming influence among the squad.

These qualities have faded over time and persistent injuries have marred his career under Ronald Koeman, who will likely offload him at the next opportunity.

Despite glimpses of greatness, the man who was once tipped as a future Everton captain will likely leave the club without ever reaching his potential.
