10 Most Famous World Cup Penalty Misses

2. David Trezeguet (2006)

Can there be any worse feeling for a footballer to face than missing a penalty in a World Cup final? It's the most important game of any player's career; the opportunity to make an entire country proud of you and write your name into footballing history.

David Trezeguet had already established himself as a French legend, participating in his team's 1998 World Cup win and scoring a golden goal in the Euro 2000 final, but when given a chance to help Les Bleus to another World Cup trophy, Trezeguet blew it.

Despite seeing Zidane sent off in extra time, the French held out for a 1-1 draw and made it to the penalty shootout. Andrea Pirlo and Marco Materazzi scored the first two spot kicks for the Italians and Sylvain Wiltord had netted France's opening strike. Trezeguet was second in line and blasted his penalty against the underside of the crossbar. The ball bounced down onto the goal line and back out onto the pitch, and Italy completed a perfect run of penalties to become World Champions.
