10 Most Famous World Cup Penalty Misses

1. Roberto Baggio (1994)

1994's World Cup final between Brazil and Italy was marred by mistakes and missed chances. Both teams had a few clear opportunities to score but couldn't put the ball away and the final ended up being decided by penalties for the first time ever.

Franco Baresi, the captain of Italy, blasted his strike way over the bar to start the shootout but Brazil's Marcio Santos saw his strike saved to even the odds. Both sides then scored a couple of penalties, until Italy's Daniele Massaro's shot was saved. Dunga scored for Brazil, meaning that Italy's iconic playmaker Roberto Baggio had to score to keep his team in with a chance.

In what would come to be seen as the defining moment of the tournament, Baggio blazed his penalty way over the crossbar, handing the World Cup to Brazil and ensuring that despite a wonderful career, he never got to lift a trophy with his country.
