10 Most Famous World Cup Penalty Misses

3. Asamoah Gyan (2010)

The 2010 World Cup was filled with memorable moments. We saw an African nation host the tournament for the first ever time, we witnessed the incredible Diego Forlán make his mark on the event with some stunning strikes, Spain got their first ever World Cup win, and Emile Heskey started up front for England against Algeria in what was perhaps the dullest game of the summer.

We also saw Ghana. The Black Stars carried the hearts of Africa on their backs, making it all the way to the quarter finals, with their leading man, Asamoah Gyan, scoring some vital goals along the way. The Ghanaians had a fantastic chance of being the first African side to reach a semi-final when Luis Suarez handballed on the line and gave away a penalty in the dying minutes of the team's 1-1 quarter final clash with Uruguay.

Tragically, Gyan would not turn out to be the hero on this occasion. He put too much power into his strike, blasting it against the crossbar, much to the delight of Suarez and his fellow Uruguayans. Gyan did score in the ensuing penalty shootout but Uruguay won 4-2 in the end.
