Alex Karras and Paul Hornung were both suspended for the 1963 season after they were found guilty of betting on NFL games, with Karras owning a bar where the illegal activity was going on. During his season away from the sport, Karras became a professional wrestler, though he returned to the league along with Hornung in 1964. In his first game back, the quick-witted defensive tackle refused to pick a side of the coin for the toss at the start of a game, telling the referee: "I'm sorry, sir. I'm not permitted to gamble."
