10 Most Shocking World Cup Moments Ever

7. Geoff Hurst's Goal

Many England fans fear they’ll never see the Three Lions win a World Cup, but if you happened to be alive in 1966, you would have been lucky enough to witness England’s sole victory in the competition. It was an incredible tournament and it’s almost impossible to argue that England didn’t deserve to win, but their victory in the final against West Germany wasn’t without controversy.

90 minutes wasn't enough to separate the sides and the game went into extra time. England started well, with Bobby Charlton hitting the post. Then, after 11 minutes, a cross came in from the right and the legendary Geoff Hurst turned it in - or did he? The ball hit the bar, bounced onto the goal line and then back out onto the pitch.

The referee wasn’t sure if the goal should stand, but his linesman assured him that the ball had gone in. The goal was given and England won the game 4-2, but Hurst’s strike remains controversial to this day. Experts have analysed the footage and say that the ball did cross the line, but you’ll still find plenty of Germans who have a very different view of the so-called ‘ghost goal’.
