As part of Kawasaki€™s Team Green amateur programme, Parker won multiple titles at the 1984 Loretta Lynn€™s event. In his first race as a pro, at the 1985 San Diego Supercross in the 125cc West division, Parker would finish on the podium. However, an ankle injury in the same year would almost put Parker out of the sport for good. Parker blames the injury for the end of his career in America. The following year Parker was invited to Europe to attend a Danny Chandler benefit. He would there receive an offer to race full time in Europe. In 1987 an offer to ride the World Championship fell through. He would later compete in the Italian National Championship, where he immediately found success. He would win the 1988 Italian 125cc and 500cc titles. Securing a ride for KTM to contest the 125cc World Championship in 1989, he would shock the motocross world by winning both moto€™s of the opening Grand Prix, taking his first GP win. Parker would go on to win the World title with KTM in his first year. He was also the first American to become 125cc World Champion. After an injury forced him out of the 1990 250cc Championship early, he was signed to ride a 250cc Honda in 1991. He once again shocked motocross fans by becoming 250cc World Champion. Parker was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of fame in 2007.
