10 Most Unpredictable Goalkeepers Of All Time
1. René Higuita
There could only ever be one.
A shoo-in for the title before this list was even written, Rene Higuita manages to eclipse all his contemporaries on this list based on his unparalleled erraticism.
It's fair to say someone who earned the nickname El Loco during his playing career has to have been at least slightly unpredictable.
No stranger to controversy, Higuita was a friend of the infamous Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar. In 1993, Higuita was arrested and incarcerated for seven months for profiting from a kidnapping involving Escobar.
Like the aforementioned Campos, Higuita was shorter than average at 5ft9. Also, like Campos, the Columbian was more than capable in front of (the other) goal, finishing his career as the fifth highest scoring professional goalkeeper of all time. Higuita blended his incredible athleticism with his unshakable erraticism leading to incredible results; most noteworthy of these was his ridiculous scorpion kick save against England in 1995.
Sometimes his unorthodox style was far less effective, however. In a game against a surging Cameroon side at the 1990 World Cup, Higuita demonstrated his trademark recklessness by collecting the ball halfway up his own half before being dispossessed, leading to a Roger Milla goal.
The streak of off-field controversies followed Higuita throughout his career; in 2004 he tested positive for cocaine while playing in his native Colombia.
