10 Newcastle Centre-Backs Chancel Mbemba Should Look To Emulate
6. Darren Peacock
Signed for a £2.7 million in March 1994, Peacock was an important part of Kevin Keegan's side of the mid-1990s. Clocking up more than 130 league appearances in four years, the Bristol native formed an unusual but effective partnership alongside Philippe Albert and established himself as a tough tackler, perhaps due to his early career stint in the lower leagues before moving up the divisions, peaking in the black-and-white stripes. An unheralded member of "The Entertainers" Peacock is not remembered in the same way as his more flamboyant colleague Albert. Nonetheless, the former Queens Park Rangers defender contributed well and, on his watch, the club actually had quite a good defensive record before he was moved on by Kenny Dalglish. There were a number of highlights though, with European trips, the brilliant heights of the Keegan era and scoring against Manchester United in the 5-0 rout at St James' Park in 1996. Now manager of Lancaster City in the Northern Premier League, if fellow boss Steve McClaren is able to get the kind of intensity and strong tackling out of Chancel Mbemba that the club got from Peacock, it could make for an interesting pairing alongside the ball-playing Fabricio Coloccini.

University of Edinburgh graduate with a love of sport, in particular Newcastle United surprisingly enough. When I'm not shaking my head at Paul Dummett and Yoan Gouffran, I'm usually reading something or watching films of varying quality.
