Before 1993, Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders held the rookie goal scoring record, which he set during the 1977-78 season. Bossy had scored an impressive fifty-three goals amid his rookie campaign, and that record held for fifteen years. But as they say, all records are made to be broken. At least, that’s what Teemu Selänne said during his own rookie year in 1992-93.

The Finnish prospect had almost signed with the Calgary Flames before his breakout campaign, but Winnipeg was able to exercise its right to match the offer set by Calgary and signed Selänne to three-year contract worth $2.7 million. He proved to be well worth the money, as he scored an incredible seventy-six goals during his first NHL season. That amazing goal total tied the Finn for first in the NHL, and placed him fifth overall in points. Selänne’s rookie year included four hat-tricks and a four-goal game.

Teemu Selänne was never able to replicate the ridiculous success of his first NHL season; but he still enjoyed a very successful career, highlighted by winning the Stanley Cup in 2007 with his long-time team, the Anaheim Ducks.
