With Southampton having made the Tigers an 'offer they couldn't refuse' - in less severe fashion than Michael Corleone - for Shane Long, Steve Bruce hopped straight in his car and drove straight into the mire of the transfer window madness in a bid to replace the void. With Blackburn Rovers goal machine Jordan Rhodes having ripped up the Championship for the last number of years, Hull were quick to table a £12 million bid of their own for the striker, opening the door for a frustrating week of activity for Bruce. With the bid having been knocked back by the Lancashire outfit, the former Sunderland boss cut a very frustrated and bemused figure, claiming that the club only pursued a deal for the striker after having received encouragement from Rovers.
''The Jordan Rhodes deal is dead and buried. It's their prerogative. We got an indication from them they were willing to do a deal and that changed in 24 hours. If they'd said that at the start then we'd have walked away. We thought it was close, but he's not for sale now so we move on. It's disappointing for everyone, but more so for Jordan.'' - Steve Bruce, August 2014.
It's fair to say that Bruce wasn't best pleased with the antics of Blackburn Rovers. But then, considering the frankly bizarre chain of events that have unfolded at Ewood Park over the last three years, is it any surprise that some things may be a bit off?
