Another devastating missed opportunity, the reds came so close to signing this celebrated Brazilian right back in 2006 that both parties had given the all-clear for the signing to go through. Alves was reportedly very happy, we were happy, his agent was happy. The only spanner in the works were his then-current team Sevilla, who decided that the £7 million we were offering was quite enough. At least £1 million off, in fact. So, instead of bagging one of the best right backs of the era, Rafael Benitez called off negotiations and Alves stayed at Sevilla just long enough for him to crop up on Barcelona's radar. They managed to sign him in 2008 for the much, much higher cost of ‚32.5 million, making him the third most expensive defender of all time. In any league. And his quality on the pitch shows he was worth it. So maybe he was worth an extra million quid, back in the day...
