10 Players You Didn’t Know Liverpool Almost Signed
8. Mario Götze
2012 was a very different time to be a Liverpool fan. This last season was one of the team's best in years, but a scant couple of years ago we were mired in one of our worst runs in recent memory, first with the bang up job Roy Hodgson did in a caretaker role and then the thoroughly disappointing return of Kenny Dalglish to the gaffer's role. Not only did Kenny miss out on signing the young Mohamed Diame, but he also managed to screw up a deal to sign attacking midfielder Mario Gotze, one of the best players in his position around today. The story goes that it came down to a choice between the German international or...Jordan Henderson. Dalglish claimed that Henderson was always his number one target, but there's plenty of scuttlebutt which'll suggest he was pressured by the board to bring in more British players. Or you could listen to the other scuttlebutt that Kenny was looking for British talent himself and, blinded by his quest, missed out on a player so good Bayern Munich recently spent a record-breaking 37 million to pinch him from Borussia Dortmund.
