10 Players You Didn't Know Stoke Almost Signed

2. Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor has certainly been around a bit during his career. Perhaps that has something to do with his troublesome antics or penchant for giving up on a club for months on end. Whatever the cause, he has fashioned himself as something of a journeyman, but his first forays in English football could just as easily have been at the Britannia Stadium, as opposed to Highbury. The only stumbling block? Unsurprisingly, money. Former Stoke City chief scout, Lindsay Parsons, has recently revealed a list of players who he recommended to Tony Pulis during his time at the club, including the likes of Cheick Tiote, Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba. One of them, however, was a certain Togolese hit-man plying his trade in Ligue 1.
''I remember one of the first names I gave to Tony at Stoke was a lightning-quick, 6ft 4in striker called Adebayor. But we were in the Championship and we were told the fee of £3 million was too much.'' - Lindsay Parsons, April 2013.
Emmanuel Adebayor - if ever there was one player who you wouldn't bank on doing it on a cold Wednesday night in Stoke, it would be him.
