The reasons why Bebe was bought by Manchester United are such a mystery that the club was even questioned by Portuguese police two years after signing the 20 year old forward from Vitoria de Guimaraes. In the end, there proved to be no wrong-doing on the Red Devils part - it was just simply a strange transfer, and was predicted to be just that by the majority of fascinated onlookers when the club shelled out a hefty £7.4 million for a player who had spent most of his career in the Portuguese third division. The winger, who had participated in the 2009 European Street Football Festival, was offered to PSV Eindhoven two months before his Old Trafford move but was ultimately rejected as they knew nothing about him. Subsequently, he signed for Portuguese side Vitoria on a free transfer, scoring five goals in six friendly matches before moving to Manchester to make the Portuguese side a suspiciously large profit on a player they had purchased for free weeks earlier. It was a transfer that was always going to raise eyebrows, and Bebe did little to allay fears that his Portuguese third division standard would be able to cut the mustard at Old Trafford, turning in a couple of pitiful displays for the club before spending the next three years out on loan at various different clubs, before permanently signing for Benfica in the summer of 2014. A strange one, indeed.
