10 Players Sir Alex Ferguson Was Completely Wrong About

6. Gabriel Obertan

Manchester United have made a number of great French signings in the past. Fabian Barthez, Patrice Evra, 'King' Eric Cantona... but one Frenchman who didn't go down quite so well at Old Trafford is Gabriel Obertan. Obertan signed for the club in 2009 from Bordeux with Sir Alex Ferguson heralding his latest recruit after the winger scored in pre-season by saying: 'Goals always help players of course, and when they are forwards in particular. There is a goal in Gabby, there is no question of that.' He was right, there was a goal in Obertan - if he meant it in a literal sense. The midfielder scored only one goal for United during a forgettable two-season spell, and that came in the Champions League against little-heard-of Turkish side Bursaspor. There was 'a goal in him' when he was eventually sold to Newcastle as well, with the player having managed only one in the Premier League since joining the Magpies in 2011. Obertan was one of the worst signings of the Ferguson era and can only be remembered as being a flop. He is still chipping away trying to find a breakthrough in English football with Newcastle but so far he has been as poor at St James' Park as he was at the Theatre of Dreams.
