10 Players We Still Can't Believe Won The Champions League

4. Ivan Campo

In many ways, Ivan Campo was the Marouane Fellaini of the early '00s. An afro-haired defensive midfielder who paled in comparison to the usual standard that was required at the gargantuan club that had snapped him up. When he finally swapped the company of Zidane, Ronaldo et al, for a club more in tune with his ability, in Bolton Wanderers during the summer of 2002, normality seemed to have returned to the footballing world. That still doesn€™t change the fact, however, that this burly defensive midfielder, capped four times for his country, has two Champions League medals to call his own. Left on the bench for that 2001 Zidane-stamped final in Glasgow, Campo marshalled the defence for the club€™s eighth European Cup victory in the 2000 Final, against former side Valencia. Playing 90 minutes with Ivan Campo as a centre-back, perhaps it€™s no wonder that they felt it necessary to employ Ivan Helguera as a sweeper. Campo will never be written into the Real Madrid Hall of Fame. Au contraire, he will more than likely be swept under the carpet, and blacklisted as one to forget, ala Julien Faubert, Julio Baptista and Geremi. However, maybe there is hope for the likes of Fellaini, as Campo raises two fingers to his critics and toasts to his two European Cup medals.
