People can complain about the fact that the likes of Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho cost Spurs a combined £73 million - but at least they could still come good and Spurs would get a hefty sum if they were to sell any of them. With David Bentley, he was just an outright waste of money. He cost £15 million when he joined Spurs from Blackburn Roversi in July 2008 and his wages were £50,000 per week. Touted as the next David Beckham, he was anything but. Bentley flattered to deceive at White Hart Lane and contributed very little to warrant his cost. He did score an outstanding 43 yard dipping volley against his former club and Spurs bitter North London rivals Arsenal, but his time at Spurs will be remembered for nothing more than what might have been, rather than what was. All in all, in a five year spell at the club, he played 42 times in the league - scoring twice - and 20 times in other competitive games - scoring a further three times. Those five goals each cost Spurs £3 million and his 62 appearances have almost been matched by some players in a single season in all competitions. He was loaned no less than four times to Birmingham City, West Ham United, FC Rostov and his former Blackburn Rovers. None of these spells were fruitful and he returned to Spurs no better for each of them, before being released on the 7th of June in 2013.
